To avoid trouble with his pension he changed the spelling of his name. In his last years he has become blind. He married April 6, 1844, Lanie A. *This might have been true at the time. However, the last name is spelled Shepperson, Shephard, & Shepherdson on different US Censuses from 1850-1900. And, on two of them, along with the 1895 Iowa State Census, it was spelled Shepardson. Numerous other records, including the death certificates for both Napoleon & his daughter, Mary Ann, as well as the gravestone for Joseph, corrected the last name to Shepardson.

Langford (born 1843 or early 1844), January 11, 1866, St. Louis County, MO, 5 children; (3) Iva O. Gaston (born 1864, daughter of John H. (1825-1915) and Jane (Reed) (1825-1897) Gaston), June 11, 1890.

George was a teacher when he married Chloe. She came from a big family (9 siblings). According to the 1850 Census, George and Chloe lived in Yates, NY with George’s parents, Otis and Lydia Shepardson. George enlisted in the 4th Regiment, Ill. Calvalry on August 13, 1861. In 1861, “Cap” Shepardson was active in recruiting volunteers in and around Earlville, IL. That is probably how he received his commission as captain.

He was actively involved in the key battles of Fort Donelson (February 11-16, 1862) and Shiloh (April 6-7, 1862) and was seriously wounded November 18, 1862, near Chestnut Bluffs, TN. He was taken prisoner and paroled almost immediately. An interesting incident resulting from his being falsely accused of withholding recruiting bounty which led to his arrest in April and May of 1863. He was acquitted of this crime. A copy of his handwritten defense letter is in Addendum #3. He was mustered out of service November 3, 1864.

When Chloe and George were divorced is not known but must have been before 1866.

After marrying Frances, they lived in Paxton, IL, where they had 5 children: one girl and 4 boys. During this time he served as Mayor of Paxton, IL (1883 – 1892), served on Paxton’s Board of Education, 1884, and worked as a land agent in real estate. George was active in Masonic organizations. So much so, that when he built his new home in 1870, he had several Masonic emblems etched into the exterior of the foundation. In 1867, he was inducted as a charter member of the Royal Arch Masons, Ford Chapter, Paxton, ILL, No. 113. He served a total of 8 years as their high priest 1874-76, 78-84. At some point in the late 1880’s or early 1890’s, Frances and “Cap” were divorced. According to Charles Otis’s diaries, she was living in St. Louis in 1894, 1898, and 1903. Her sons, Lewis, George, and Charles Otis were living with or near her during these years. She died in 1934.

When George married Iva, he was 61 and she was 26. They lived in Chicago where he worked as a loan agent. In the 1900 Census, they were recorded as living at 1702 Alden in Ward 25, Chicago, IL. He was also listed as the Enumerator for his Census District. He died in 1902, at the age of 73, and was buried in Paxton, IL. Iva died March 25, 1950 and was buried in Glen Cemetery, Paxton, IL. Children (all with second wife, Frances):

*It is believed by the locals that Clara & Francis are buried on the property, each under a maple tree that had been planted to commemorate their lives.

NOAH OTIS SHEPARDSON (Otis7, Noah6, Amos5, Amos4, John3, Daniel2, Daniel1) married (1) in Lyndonville, NY, January 20, 1855, Lydia P. Bennett, (2) in Fremont, OH, September, 1881, Olive (Ollie) Brunthaven, (3) in Wyandotte, Michigan, April 10, 1884, Mary Nicholson, (4) in Rockford, Illinois, September 30, 1901, Mary Louise Hare. He worked as a laborer, carpenter, farmer, merchant, and finally as a physician (mainly in Rockford, IL).

Like his older brother George J., he served in the Civil War. He was on detached duty from the 8th N.Y. Heavy Artillery (his tombstone reads 23 NYLA – New York Light Artillery, but he never reported to it). He was assigned active duty in New Berne, NC as a street inspector. The war lasted seven more months after he enlisted.

He attended Bennett Medical College in Chicago briefly in 1870.

Noah’s second wife, Olive, was 26 when he married her (he was 47). At the time she was widowed. His dalliances with her ended his first marriage. However, he married wife #2 before getting a divorce. Olive died 6 months after he married her. Her death was probably the result of scarlet fever.

His third wife, Mary Nicholson, was 31 when they married (he was 49). She died in 1901 of a frightening death. Her chest cavity and internal organs began to harden to the consistency of “bone” and eventually she could no longer take in fluids or food.

Seven months after her death, he married his fourth wife, Mary Louise Hare, age 30 (he was 66). They separated (at least he came home to his first family in Fremont, OH to die). After his death Mary Louise received his Civil War pension.

He was a Knight Templar and in his prime was active in Masonic circles. He passed away at the home of a son, Otis Shepardson, Fremont, OH, where he is buried. He died May, 1907, age 71, from a general breaking down of old age.

Children, all with first wife, were all born in Lyndonville, except last who was born in Kankakee, IL:

He married Mary Louise Sloan, April 23, 1902, daughter of Patrick H. and Ellen (Flynn) Sloan of Fletcher. The marriage ceremony took place in St. Patrick's Church, Fairfield, VT. He was postmaster at the Center from 1898 until the post office was discontinued in 1911. In addition, he was Fletcher's Representative at the General Assembly in 1894, and in 1910 was elected Senator from Franklin County. Without verification, we believe he is the only person from Fletcher to be so honored by the voters of Franklin County.

Minnie, as Will's wife was affectionately known, was equally active in the town, as a teacher in the public schools and, later, as Supervisor of Fletcher's School Districts, as well as Ass't Postmaster and Ass't Town Clerk. Will died December 5, 1937 & Minnie died March 25, 1938. Both are buried in St. Patrick's Cemetery, Fairfield, VT. Children:

*The GCS History has the year as 1906 (believe from Herbert’s family Bible). However, all Fletcher records have the year as 1911, Herbert’s 1911 diary lists the child being born on August 30th, & Willie’s & Minnie’s gravestone lists “Infant Son 1911.”

LUKE BEMIS SHEPARDSON (Eri7, Daniel6, Jonathan5, Jonathan4, Nathaniel3, Daniel2, Daniel1) lived in Royalston, MA. Married Ellen Tandy1 in 1877 (1850-1939). Luke was a 2nd generation member of the Masonic lodge, Star Lodge, of Athol. He died September 23, 1933. Both are buried in Royalston.

Luke’s grandson, DANIEL E. SHEPARDSON, tells a story of how the family was displeased with Luke’s choice of a girlfriend. When Luke was working on the crews that were building the Hoosac Tunnel he would stay near the job site during the week and come home on the weekends. (The Hoosac Tunnel is one of the greatest engineering feats of the 19th century, 1855-1875. The tunnel was dug 4.75 miles through Hoosac Mountain, linking Massachusetts to Albany, NY. 200 men lost their lives building the tunnel, which is still being used today.) Luke was seeing a girl that lived in Fitzwilliam, NH and when he came home to the farm in Royalston on the weekends, he would travel by horse and buggy up to Fitzwilliam to call on her. The family did not approve of this girl and made their opinions well known. Luke’s sister Delia was one of the most outspoken of the family in her dislike for this girl. Luke had stopped seeing the girl in Fitzwilliam and started calling on the Rev. Tandy’s daughter, Ellen, who lived just up the road. The two families were well acquainted and the Shepardsons loved Ellen Tandy as another sister. Luke and Ellen carried on their relationship in secret for some time, all the while allowing people to believe that Luke was still going to Fitzwilliam. One weekend, before he left for the week to return to the tunnel, Luke announced to the family that he was to be married the following weekend and the family was invited. Luke didn’t say otherwise and the family assumed that the bride was to be the girl from Fitzwilliam. The family’s dislike of this Fitzwilliam girl affected their choices in wedding gifts. Luke’s sister Delia gave the couple just a simple dried flower arrangement. When the day of the wedding came the family was shocked, and Delia mortified, to discover that the girl Luke was marrying was their beloved Ellen Tandy from up the road. Delia now wished dearly to replace the dried flower arrangement with something more ornate but Luke would have none of it. As a constant reminder to Delia and the rest of the family of their behavior, Luke prominently displayed the dried flower arrangement on the fireplace hearth in the living room of the farm where everyone would see it. The arrangement stayed in that location until the day that Delia died in 1929. Children: Link to Daniel in 11th gen
