CHARLES OTIS SHEPARDSON (George8, Otis7, Noah6, Amos5, Amos4, John3, Daniel2, Daniel1) married (1) Harriet (Harrie) MacDonald, October 22, 1887 at St. Cloud, MN; (2) Gertrude (Trude) L. Sturm (born June 4, 1875) on April 12, 1904. He was known as C.O. He kept a diary that detailed his life in his early twenties living in St. Louis, MO. In the spring of 1894, C.O. (age 25), his wife Harrie (age 24), and two boys Clare (age 6), and Chas (age 1) and C.O’s younger brother Louis (age 16) were living with his mother, Francis Langford, in St. Louis, MO.

Most of C.O.’s life was spent working as a clerk or auditor for different railroad companies. In 1899, he started off the year unemployed. There is an entry in his diary of Jan 4th and 5th (1899) stating that he and Cousin George had no luck looking for work. Finances were tough during these years, being out of work had to be very stressful. In each of the three years chronicled in his diaries (1894, 1899, and 1903), C.O. would lose his job, often for a general reduction in work force, once because he got mad and quit when his employer faulted him for missing work when he was sick. Those were tough times.

It took him an hour or more to commute each way to East St. Louis. He also carried his lunch because he stated he couldn’t find any decent food in the area. On another note, many of his diary entries mention buying cigars and tobacco.

As in years before, C.O. was having severe frequent headaches. In 1899, they were noted in his diary entries for February 21st, April 11th, June 19th, June 20th, July 8th, August 2nd, October 31st, and, again, on December 2nd (staying home from work on the 3rd). The episode on June 20th cost him his job. In the diary entry for October 31, 1899, C.O. wrote, “stayed home from work but “Trude” cured it.” A lot could be read into that comment.

In the 1900 Census, C.O. was living with Harriet (wife) at 3639 MacRee Ave. in St. Louis (24th Ward), MO. They were renting. C.O. at 31 years old was working as a railroad clerk, Harriet (30), H. Clare (11), Chas (7), and Clyde (3).

Harrie left C.O. on March 11, 1901. Trude had to play a role in this separation. On March 23, 1903, a divorce was granted to C.O., giving him custody of the children. A July 19, 1903 entry indicates Trude (age 28) was living with and paying board to C.O (age 34). On September 7, 1903, C.O., Trude, and his boys moved from his mother’s into a new rental in St. Louis.

An interesting diary entry on September 10, 1903 resulted from a coincidental meeting of C.O. and his ex-wife, Harrie, at a train stop. The detail C.O. uses in describing what Harrie was wearing was not seen elsewhere in the diary. The fact Harrie was taking on a new name, and planning to head to a Colorado mining camp raises more questions.

In the 1910 census, C.O. was listed as head of household with Chas, age 17 (student), and Clyde, age 13 (student). No mention of a wife. The 1920 Census shows C.O. living at 2119 Eagle Ave. Alameda Township in Alameda County, CA. The census data lists his age at 48*. He had a clerical job with a railroad company. Trude was not employed. Also living with him were his son Clyde (age 22) and Clyde’s new wife Susan Marin (age 24), and his oldest son Harry Clare, who was a medical student at UC Berkeley.

Gertrude (Trude) was married and lived with C.O. from 1904 until she died on December 1, 1939. In 1944, C.O. moved to 1060 Blossom Way, in Hayward, CA. He lived at this address until his death in 1955. This house had a vegetable garden, a detached garage with a shop, and a chicken shed in the back of the garage. C.O.’s middle son, Chas, lived in this home after C.O.’s death.

Richard Shepardson remembers a frightful event that happened sometime around 1950 in Almaden, California. C.O. was visiting their family on the apricot and prune ranch. At dinner, C.O.’s chair collapsed, with C.O. falling backwards and hitting his head against the wall. That was a scary accident. Luckily, there was no serious injury. C.O. was blind at that time and about 81 years old. C.O. had a German Shepherd Seeing Eye Dog. It was stolen which was a real tragedy in C.O.’s life.

C.O. passed away June 23, 1955 at age 86 in Alameda, CA. He was a 60-year member of the Masonic Order & a member of Woodstock Lodge 491, F & A.M., Alameda, CA. His obituary in the Hayward, CA The Daily Review, gave his age as 88 which was incorrect.

*RDS Note: My computing would indicate he was 51, his wife Trude, age 44.
