DAVID EUGENE SHEPARDSON (Oliff9, Lorenzo8, Otis7, Samuel6, John5, Daniel4, John3, Daniel2, Daniel1) married Nellie Ruth Baird (born November 10, 1920, daughter of Daniel and Marnie (Schuster) Baird) in 1936-7 in Blythe, CA. He lived his entire life in Blythe, with the exception of a short trade school program in Los Angeles, and a one-year enlistment in the Navy. He After the start of World War II, he was hired to maintain the utilities at the Army Air Force Base, located on the mesa west of Blythe. He was stationed on the Marshall Islands with a Sea Bee unit, at the end of World War II.
After his honorable discharge from the Navy, Dave worked with Blythe Alfalfa Growers and purchased a ranch on Riverside Drive, now known as Chanslor Way. His ranching operation expanded to approximately 160 acres by the purchase and/or leasing of additional land. The land was used to grow various crops, in addition to grazing cattle. Dave, who was a man of many talents and abundant energy, added to his workload by establishing Shepwell's, Inc. in 1948.
Shepwell's was the primary local firm for the production of high quality concrete and related materials that were used to construct many of the streets, utilities, buildings and other improvements in Palo Verde Valley. Shepwell's continued to provide these materials and services for 40 years. Dave provided additional construction related services by operating the only truck crane in Palo Verde Valley for many years. He was instrumental in the construction of the street and utility improvements as an employee of the City of Blythe.
He served as a volunteer fireman for over 20 years, & spent many years on the River Cruise Committee, including the chairman's position. He earned a reputation as being the expert chef at the Fireman's Steak Bake and conducted the deep pit barbecues for the River Cruise.
A few examples of his determination to benefit the residents of Palo Verde Valley are illustrated by the work he did to install a system in 1955 that allowed the homes to receive a television signal; and through his efforts in 1995 to retain the rail line that served Palo Verde Valley. He was instrumental in the development of both the Mayflower and MacIntyre parks, as a member of the Riverside County Parks Commission.
Although he decided to retire from Shepwell's at the age of 80, he continued to stay active in the development of Ranchette Estates, a custom home subdivision on Chanslor Way.
Nellie died April 25, 1993, Blythe, CA and David died May 12, 2009, Rancho Mirage, CA. Both buried in Blythe, CA. Children: 11th Gen: Donald, David
